OGS Lawyers Meet 2019

The OGS ‘Networking Series’ is an opportunity to allow KGS alumni to explore and expand  their alumni network. This event brings alumni together for an evening of ‘meet and greet’ in different cities around the world. Held at local venues, these events are designed to provide networking opportunities in fun, informal, and relaxed settings.

The OGS organized the first networking event for OGS lawyers in Karachi on September 21, 2019 at Karachi Boat Club, from 5 pm onwards. Over 25 alumni, from a range of graduating batches, were present for the event. The Attorney General for Pakistan and KGS alumnus, Mr. Anwar Mansoor Khan was the speaker for the evening. President of OGS, Salman Ahmed introduced Mr. Anwar Mansoor after the informal networking session. The Attorney General recalled his experience at KGS; he also described his career, and the challenges and opportunities of public service. The talk provided insight and guidance to the lawyers present. It was a great opportunity for alumni to learn from Mr. Mansoor Khan’s experience as they chart their own journeys forward.

Special thanks to Taha Alizai, Faiza Kapadia Raffay, Zara Tariq and Andalib Alavi who contributed to making the evening possible!

OGS Club Night 2019

Club Night was held at the Karachi Parsi Institute on October 12th 2019. The venue was given a modern, festive look for the night, with lounges, elaborate props and a dance floor. Canapés and refreshments were served throughout the evening, as conversation and laughter melted into the upbeat music.

Over 240 alumni and their friends attended  and had a chance to rekindle old memories with many attendees meeting alumni from various years.

Lights, sound, color and music came together perfectly to create a memorable evening.

An alumnus from the Class of 1995 who attended Club Night recalls: “It was nice meeting up with old grammarians – It was a bit of a blast from the past! The setup was beautiful and I had fun!’

OGS Interhouse Volleyball Tournament 2019

Over 40 alumni enjoyed an exciting game of winter volleyball on November 30. The OGS Interhouse volleyball tournament was played under lights at the KGS College Campus. Principle Mr. Glasson was present to lend his support throughout the evening.

The evening started with a special match featuring OGS vs KGS. OGS beat their old rivals KGS in a fiercely fought competition. Saquib Munawar, Yasir Minhaj and Hasnat Hassan were among the players representing OGS. The interhouse matches were played next. Frere beat Napier in two straight sets to win the interhouse games. The players all performed well and played enthusiastically.

OGs have a connection with each other that transcends time and geography. The match was a great opportunity to bring together alumni and allow them to interact with current students.

Admiring the zeal of the players and the strong bond between KGS alumni, Mr. Glasson said: “I have rarely seen an old school network that is so proactive and also has so strong a connection with the school. These are two unique features of OGS.”

Spectators had a chance to enjoy hot, gourmet food served at the College Campus canteen, as they watched the match in the flood-lit volleyball field. Naazer Minhaj (Class of 1996) was pivotal in working with OGS Sports Sub Committee Chair, Maroof Mehboob, to put together the teams and the event. Staff member, Mr. Hasan Iqbal and KGS coach Mr. Abid Elahi, also helped organize the games and were present throughout.

The match was a wonderful expression of the cooperation and connection that exists between alumni and current students at KGS.

KGS-OGS Summer Internships 2019

The OGS Mentorship platform was established to provide KGS students and younger OGs with exposure to careers and professional opportunities. An important initiative from this platform was the opportunity for KGS students in A levels to intern with corporates/companies, some of which are also led by OGs.

A total of 50 placements were arranged and 45 students availed the summer internships through the OGS platform. The internships were in the areas of advertising, computer science, engineering, education, healthcare and law, and included experience in social impact organisations and nonprofits. The Head of Student Counseling at KGS was also involved in the placement of the students.

The organisations that offered internships were:

  • JWT|Grey Pakistan
  • Linked Things
  • S.Mehboob and Company Pvt. Ltd
  • The Citizen’s Foundation (TCF)
  • Akhuwat Foundation
  • The Indus Hospital
  • Abrahim and Sarwana Advocates
  • Zahid and Tariq Advocates
  • Attorney General’s Office, Government of Sindh
  • Dewa Trust
  • The Hunar Foundation
  • The Charter for Compassion Trust

Each summer internship was between one and four weeks in duration, during which student interns had the opportunity to observe, interact with other employees, and participate directly in the work of each company. This was a unique opportunity for them to learn about different professions, since most companies only offer internships to college students and not those in A levels. Moreover, the exposure was under the guidance of another KGS student.

Some alumni visiting from overseas were also provided assistance in securing internships during their summer break in Karachi.
